In Solidarity with Perumal Murugan

What I saw was what pained me.
It was a huge mass of accumulated fodder.
I was forced to swallow an unwelcoming hospitality.
As a guest to them I had to gobble a filthy dish.
I took my leave, held my breath and ran away.
But that mass wanted to get out of me.
Pushing out through my esophagus.
A dish laced with morality, deity and priests.
Was causing a suffocating nauseating sensation.
Pinching me inside of me like nails.
Hammering on the inside of my skin.
I threw up and they were words.
Simply a permutation and combination.
Of 26 alphabets and two punctuation.
My words pinched them.
But their bullying, abuses and threats broke me.
I tried to hide those words, the books and everything.
And now I let those words cause me pain.
I die everyday.

How important is ones sense to think? I know its important for everyone to think, as I would be crippled if I was deprived of my ability to think. So what is it that one thinks of?  I think about a lot of things and thinking actually braces one with the ability to answer, debate, blog (of course:D). Thoughts can take you to un-imaginable limits, thoughts can motivate you to do what everyone told you is impossible. 

My cousin who has just hit the teen age thinks about what her favourite actoress Kareena said while she was drunk in '3 idiots'. She asked me Di what is a Gay? I replied to her that gay is a person who is attracted towards a person of same sex, females are called lesbians and males are called gays. Great I managed to answer a teenager's thought process, and then came question number two, Di what does impotent mean? Impotent is a man who cannot produce kids. Ohh what is it that a man has to do to produce kids? Thats where I was confused as to how to explain to her. But I tried my best to give her a satisfactory answer. 

Shine Di: See you know people produce kids after getting married, and not before it! Right? 

She gave an expression of consent. 

Shine Di: So there is something that a man contributes while a woman have babies. 

She said ok. 

Sigh! Did I do it well and did I clear her doubt. Well I was satisfied that she said ok, I was rather feeling proud of myself. I just taught a sex education lesson. She thought of something and thought that she can ask me to clear her doubts. 

There are many things one think about, some find people to clear doubts about their thought process and some don't. I at times get answers to my thought process on my own or through family, but when I am struck somewhere I don't know if what I think is right of wrong, I feel really feel lost. But then that is what human nature is about, philosophies give rise to hypothesis, which are challenged to give birth to laws.

Author's Note: Its important to think to be able to live and gauge the energies of being a human being! Ponder over it :D

Pleasing the Goddess

Hindu College is all set to worship Damdami Mata. For all the priests out there, who don't know about the legendary goddess should brush their knowledge. Delhi University North Campus students who don't know about this Valentine's day ritual should work a bit as a campus scribe.

The boys in the college worship Damdama/Damdami mata to bless them so that they can find love of their life. No body knows who started this ritual, but it has been followed with dedication for years. Last year Katrina Kaif played as the goddess, and this year under all possibilities its going to be Priyanka Chopra. 

The rite starts with a puja of Virgin tree, decorated with balloons, where all the guys of college collect and pujari is Mr. Fresher. As the Valentines day this year falls on sunday, when colleges are closed, the rite will take place on 13th February 2010's evening.


Going back to some 8-10 years I recall an incident where a friend told be that they would rather propose a girl with a cauliflower on valentine's day than to splurge on a rose petal. The cost of rose jumps to astronomical figures during the festive time.

HIV-AIDS

Asia and Africa are the most vulnerable continents where the AIDS pandemic has been spiralling due to lack of information. It is spread equally across the disadvantaged section of society as well as the well-to-do lot. Around 33.2 million people are living with this disease world-wide, as per the official figures which are supposed to be manipulated to the lower side, and many people would have been living in an ignorant state about carrying the infection, or due to no medical facilities in the locality. 90% of people have no knowledge about suffering from AIDS. 

Last week I happen to witness the narration by an HIV positive man, whose wife is HIV positive too. They have a daughter who is fortunately not infected with the virus. The man, his wife and the daughter suffer from humiliation, discrimination and societal isolation. At the outset people perceive that he might have had unprotected physical relation (grossly unacceptable in the Indian society) with an infected person. Other reasons of the virus transmission are not considered at all. 

While he was heartbroken, I recalled the AIDS prevention advertisement by Shabana Aazmi. In which she hugs HIV-Positive girl, spreading the message that the virus does not spread through casual contacts. Shaking hands, a peck on the cheek, hugging etc does not spread the HIV virus.

This is my stint with the topic: 

Some 4-5 years ago. I was down with fever and had bad shivers. My parents decided to get me tested for Malaria. For the test, a pin supported by a plastic holder was supposed to be pricked on my finger. I was a bit apprehensive that the pin used on me is not sterilised, and I instantly pulled off my hand. On enquiring the person politely replied that we don't use unsterilized equipments. I was proud of my promptness and surprised with the politeness of the person at other end. This is the benefit of being informed, I could have carried a doubt but I cleared it at the moment. I have been particularly cautious to buy sterilised syringes. Unfortunately medical professionals in rural areas are reported to use unsterilised, corroded syringes repeatedly on patients. Nurses don't even know how AIDS spread, they live with understanding that AIDS spreads as cough and cold. As per reports, it infects a person, during his/her most productive age. Discrimination at workplace often leads to the person getting sacked and being unable to afford treatment cost. Discrimination in society leads to lesser support. 

Some features about the disease, this is not a diagnosis but a few facts: 

AIDS / HIV - Positive status is incurable. Once you have it you have to live with it till death. 

AIDS lowers the immunity of the infected person, and the person ultimately dies as is unable to fight diseases due to low immunity. 

HIV is the virus and AIDS is a disease. Being HIV positive does not mean that the person is affected with AIDS, its when an HIV positive person starts showing the symptoms of AIDS and have been confirmed with the disease through a test.

 

Antiretroviral drugs are available to make an infected person survive for a longer time. This helps in delaying an infected person to switch from HIV - positive status to AIDS

NGOs and social organisations have been fighting with the stigma associated with HIV-AIDS. A person suffering from AIDS and witnessing stigma or discrimination can complain with NACO here

Amongst the educated ones, who feel that they don't know much about the virus and the disease, can do a bit of google search, or dial AIDS toll-free helpline at 1800-180-2008 from BSNL/MTNL numbers, or 0172-266217 from other telephone networks. The Government of India's initiative National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) also runs a telephonic helpline for people suffering from AIDS as 1097. The society can come together and disseminate as much information as possible about how it is spread and how it can be prevented. Wikipedia also pays a considerable web-page share for AIDS. Gender Blender

Again the 'State of Nation Survey', conducted as a crusade by CII-IBN caught my attention. Findings of the survey suggests, 'Ideas not clothes define Indian Women.' Alrite beyond any peradventure I subscribe to the thought. 

But unfortunately I have not seen in the attitude of nation's populace towards the fairer sex. Off late as per a report published in The Times of India, credits the Delhi government's 'Laadli' for balancing the sex ratio. The report outlined that 1004 girls were bron against 1000 boys in 2008. 

Sad part is.. why do we need such schemes to achieve gender balance? Do we really need stringent laws to set the society in place?

People have this inherint tendency to perceive one falling in the catagory that s/he supports. Now before you tag me as one, I dont see any point in justifing my sexual orientation to anybody. People who matter to me know me well, and those who dont know me well are clearly not under my priority list.

The idea to post something on homosexuality has been high on my agenda list. Though I have been an ardent supporter of gayism, I have deliberatly kept quite about the topic, because I wanted my understanding of the topic to be so apt that I can project my opinion in a convinsing fashion.

The High Court of Delhi decriminalise gay sex, but it remains a taboo for a whooping 70% of Indians. Refer to State of Nation Survey, which has come out with findings that Homosexuality is still a taboo in India. Well I believe this tendency prevails because people are averse to change. People think more about social stigmas than someone's happiness.

Take note of this case: "A" is happy with "B" and both are of same gender. They are like any normal couple. They are not harming anybody, just sharing some cozy moments together. Probably want to stay together forever. Die hand in hand. Adopt a child, probably a "girl". Give her the best of education and upbringing. And have a normal life!

Case two (if queers remain illegal): A gay is cheated and heart broken. S/he feels sick and have a strong case to sue the other one. The person is encouraged to get into depression because the society does not acknowledge the existence of this creed.

People do look down to homos and make fun of them. The notorious newsy episode of linking Kjo and SRK. And the very much in news thing: Murder of SRCC alumini who was a gay. Connaught Place's Central Park and the park above Palika Baazar is frequented by the gay community. Spain Tourist Board wishes to promote its gay attractions in India. But the representative office in Delhi shyed away from promoting it on the grounds that it may envoke political rift in the country. I completely identify their apprehensions

I wish to make a point here, with a far sighted view. The Indian society has not been able to achieve any landmark on controlling female feoticide, gender bias etc. Thus having queers is a way out, let the left out male population, who is not to be blamed for the gender mismatch prevailing in the society have their share of love making witin the gay community too.

Plus NGOs, LGBTs, and social activists see lealising gayism as tool to prevent HIV AIDS to reach unfathomable limits in the country. Ours is a nation where sexual needs of people has been suppressed. Let the spirit of love in which ever form be allowed to florish. I support the spirit of queers and happy that gays are coming out to endorse their cause.

Section 354: Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, under the Prevention of Harassment of Women Act, 1998 reads as:

Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

Section 509, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) reads as follows:

Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. – Whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine or with both.
